I have heard from a radio talk show on computing
that a hardware firewall is the best. Like that
of a router.

What model router? A lot are already hardware firewalls. Were you "Hacked" from outside or did you allow something in that infected your system like a trojan or worm? Those things enter by email or P2P downloads etc. The best firewall in existence won't save you from "Invited" pests. This is not to say that a software firewall doesn't have a place in a system that's connected behind a router/hardware firewall. I have ZoneAlarm Pro ver 5.5 and rely on it to monitor and control outgoing connections. (I don't recommend the latest ZA6 as it is too intrusive) There are a number of free software firewall options available and any of them are probably better than just the Windows firewall.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Firewalls are only a small part of security best practices. There are a few linux firewall solutions that might provide enough if you include a broad plan that includes security best practices. No amount of firewall will protect your data. By the way the wireless is like giving your data away.

Hello.

I suggest Kerio PF version 4. This is a good free firewall without problems.

When you ask a question as to what is the best firewall, you are leaving yourself open to all the individual opinions that you see above. Everyone says the one the have is the best. I will add my opinion to the above. I live behind a router (hardware firewall) and use Zonealarm for my software firewall. As mentioned above I use a software firewall to monitor and control outgoing traffic only. It seems nothing gets past my hardware firewall as my intrusion logs in Zonealarm are always empty. This is a good first step to securing your system. In addition do not forget about a good (and updated) virus scanner. I use the above configuration and (touch wood) I have never been hacked and virus's are stopped at the gate.

That is my opinion. Take it for what it is worth. Good luck.

Hello.

When you try the firewalls mentioned above, try them one by one, not some or all of them at the same time.

When we suggest a firewall, it is because we have been using it without any problems, not because it is better than the others.

I first check if the firewall is conflicting/causing problems with other programs. This is my first priority. Second I check if there is anything coming into/going out of my PC without my consent.

That is why I said Kerio. I had problems with Outpost.

My PC specs: Pentium 4 3.0 GHz HT/1 GB RAM/Nvidia FX5200 video/Win XP SP2 with all post-SP2 updates/MS Office 2003 with SP1 & SP2/AVG 7 Free AV.

One advice: Please turn off Windows own firewall if you are going to install a stand-alone separate firewall.
