You don't ~actually~ get 650MB. My 120GB hard drive doesn't allow me to use 120GB.

1) Vendors measure date space in powers of ten. 1GB = 1000 (10^3) MB. The computer measures data space in powers of 2. 1GB = 1024 (2^10) MB. In that regards, your CD only has about 630MB to start out with.

2) Different file systems organize and store data differently, rendering different capacities. E.g. - HFS+ (Mac) and FAT32 (Windoze) will give you more space on a medium than HFS and FAT.

It's more complicated than just that, but don't actually expect a 640MB (or 700, or 800) CD-r(w), or a 120GB HD, or a 1.4MB floppy, to hold what it says.

The previous answer is good info but does not apply to CD's since they use a TOC (table of contents), not a FAT, and the amount of difference between the 1000=1024 doesn't add up in your case.

Are you using Nero's InCD or Roxio's Direct CD? If so, that is the problem. Formatting your CD-RW disc for packet writing is what is using up that extra space.
