well sorry to hear it was taken down and was demaned to find out what kind of system you have.
but were sorry for our behaviour and mis understandingwell it seem best option would be to get more ram also if you are using internet security that will have some adverse effest of performance also if you are using McAfee antivirus or Norton they are a bit of the problem but far as I can see best option is more ram if their is a suppoet at Dell they can tell you more and how much more ram you can add
good luck
I did check the Dell site for support and manual but poor layout.
if you can have a chat with the technician I think they can be a bit more of a help.
good luck again

laptop cooling fans don't cool well.
you also might get a 4 fan cooling fan tray the you set the laptop on. ebay has those.
speed fan does not work on all laptops, but meebe yours will be helped

My 'guess' is that more memory might be needed. But you could try shutting down all the programs running in the background to see if that helps. Use msconfig to see what all is starting up automatically when you power up the system.

Here is my file re slow XP. Infections are another big cause.
Disable Indexing Services
http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/disp...
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/Suppo...
Indexing services is a small program that hogs HUGE amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexing and updates lists of the files on your system, so you can search for them quickly, but it's completely unnecessary.
To disable it, go to the Control Panel and click Add or Remove Programs. Click the Add/Remove Window Components. Simply untick the Indexing services and click Next!
And,
1. Browse to your hard drive either through Windows Explorer or through My Computer.
2. Right click your hard drive icon and select Properties.
3. At the bottom of this window you'll see "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching," turn this feature off for all of your drives by unchecking the box and clicking Apply.
4. After that a window will appear, Select "Apply changes to subfolders and files". If any files can not be updated select "Ignore All".

Just like Windows 2000, Windows XP still fails to set the DMA mode correctly for the IDE device designated as the slaves on the primary IDE and secondary IDE channels. Most CD-ROMS are capable of supporting DMA mode, but the default in XP is still PIO. Setting it to DMA won't make your CD-ROM faster, but it will consume less CPU cycles. Here's how:
Open the Device Manager. One way to do that is to right-click on "My Computer", select the Hardware tab, and select Device Manager.
Expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" and double-click on "Primary IDE Channel".
Under the "Advanced Settings" tab, check the "Device 1" setting. More than likely, your current transfer mode is set to PIO.
Set it to "DMA if available".
Repeat the step for the "Secondary IDE Channel" if you have devices attached to it. Reboot.

If the computer persists on having only PIO after reboot even though the hard drive is a flashing super-duper ATA133 and transfer mode set to “DMA if available”, then you have to do the following:
Remove the primary device in the device manager and reboot! Voilà, now the harddrive should be running in DMA mode.
Repeat on the secondary IDE channel if necessary.

Disable XP support for zip files
http://www.quake3world.com/ubb/Foru...
http://www.technobabble.com.au/tech...
Windows XP has built-in support for .ZIP files, so that you can view them as normal folders. However, the system uses a sizeable portion of resources doing this, so disabling this feature can increase performance. It's easy to do, you just have to un-register the zipfldr.dll, by going to Start -> Run... Copy & Paste > regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll < then press Enter. You should see a message telling you the command was succesfully applied.

Disable the Paging executive
In normal usage, XP pages sections from the kernel core and drivers in memory to disk. We can stop this happening and keep the data in RAM, resulting in improved performance.
Run regedit.exe ( Start > Run, type in regedit & press Enter)
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Session Manager/Memory Management/
The setting we want to change to disable the ’Paging Executive’, as it is called, is called DisablePagingExecutive. Changing the value of this key from 0 to 1 will de-activate memory Paging.
Note: This tweak may cause problems with some Nvidia cards & drivers.

How to Disable Simple File Sharing in Windows XP Home Edition
http://www.wikihow.com/Disable-Simp...
Sometimes, you might want to change the security or permissions on a folder in Windows XP Home Edition. You will right click on the folder and select Properties, and under the Security tab you might expect to see something like you would see in Windows 2000 - a list of Users and checkboxes for Allow and Deny. However, you won't see this, because Windows XP uses something called "Simple File Sharing." You can disable it in XP Professional, but not XP Home. Apparently, XP Home users aren't to be trusted with all that power. Fear not, there is a way around this (even if it is tedious).
Steps
1. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. To do this, follow these steps:
* Restart your computer. Before you see the Windows XP logo, hold down the F8 key.
* Select Safe Mode.
2. Login in as Administrator. You'll get a warning about running in Safe Mode. Click Yes.
3. Find the folder whose permissions you wish to change. Right click on that folder, and select Properties.
4. Change the properties of the desired folder(s). Voila. You can now change all the properties of the folder just like you would in Windows 2000.

Clear virtual memory on shutdown
http://www.langa.com/newsletters/20...
Windows does not normally clear or recreate the Pagefile. On a heavily used system this can be both a security threat and performance drop. Enabling this setting will cause Windows to clear the Pagefile whenever the system is shutdown. This also means shutdown will be slower. Also avoids fragmentation of the Pagefile.

Note: Please note on systems with large amounts of memory, and therefore large swap-file, this tweak could cause a delay at shutdown due to the additional time taken to clear the data from the file. Also avoids fragmentation of the Pagefile.

How to Disable the "There are Newly Installed Programs" Balloon
When you install a new program in XP, the operating system helpfully tells you about it and highlights the new program(s) on the Start menu. If you don't like this behavior, there's something you can do about it:
Right click the Start button and select Properties.
Click the Start Menu tab.
Click the Customize button.
Click the Advanced tab.
Uncheck the box labeled "Highlight newly installed programs."

In Windows XP everytime you open My Computer to browse folders XP automatically searches for network files and printers. This causes a delay in displaying your icons. You probably see the "default" windows icon and as you scroll it changes to the correct icon. This is how to stop that...
1. Open My Computer
2. Click on the Tools menu and select Folder Options...
3. Under Folder Options select the View tab.
4. Uncheck the very first box that reads "Automatically search for network folders and printers".
5. Click "Apply" or "OK"
You should see a dramatic increase in speed when Windows displays your icons.

Why is it you still don't know what the specs of your computer are? One of the responses in the thread that was removed did instruct you how to find those specs right in Windows.

I don't know, it was near the top. If you read your Windows help files you could learn how to view the system specs.

kelvin5830, all you have to do on ANYTHING you want to know or find out, is use GOOGLE.
how to find system information

This is simply a case of not enough cooling going on. Laptops (especially average spec ones) are not for gaming. here's a link to your laptops PDF format owners manual
http://support.dell.com/support/edo...
Also just to make it easy here's what it has:
yours is a 1.4 GHz model Pentium 4 @ 400MHz system bus, copied from the info you gave. (possible yours is not set for max cpu speed though)
You either have a 32meg or 64 meg ATI Mobility RADEON 9000 graphics card.
you have DDR SODIMM (200pin) ram supporting either PC2100 or 2700 ram modules up to 2 gig in total.
Supporting 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, and 1 GB size modules.
and an Intel AC’97 audio chip
But as I say this is a heat problem and can be solved by disabling un-needed applications, ensuring your on the mains supply helps with laptop gaming as well as notching the graphics settings down so the processor has to do less work. Other than that there is not much else you can do.

Thanks JohnW for that long post!!! I can surely use the information you posted therein!

Yes i noticed that my laptop is REALLY HOT on the underside what Should i do about that..? Buy a Cooling Fan how much would that run pass by? Thank you for the help..

Best bet is to get the cooling laptop pads some one mentioned above. Been awhile since I've used one but some run off of USB or mains and some just run on a mains supply. Basically it's a pad with cooling rods in it which are cooled down. You place the laptop on top and there you go, keeps the base cool. Some run off of fans which are noisier but exact principal. Directs cool air to base of laptop which helps to eliminate some heat from the system.
Here's a link to one on ebay. You could buy one from there if you want.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TITAN-4-Fan-U...
Just remember you need to get the right power type version for you (as in USB and mains etc), also price and space available and where it is sat for normal use.
BTW interesting article JohnW
