Specs: Windows XP SP3
I was trying to enable my personal email on my work laptop running XP SP3 now I cannot log back in.. even safemode requires a login? I was logged into windows but not VPN at the time I
did this. When I tried to login this morning I only get a User Name and Password.. my password won't work and it tells me "THE SYSTEM CANNOT LOG YOU ON. MAKE SURE YOUR USER NAME AND DOMAIN ARE CORRECT, THEN TYPE YOUR PASSWORD AGAIN. ETC.".. Trouble is.. there is no domain box showing?.. So, I can get into Safe Mode but that has the same login issue. I need the Administrator Password and I don't have it. Can I use one of the programs available online to reset the administrator password and to get back into windows. I can see my user name, computer name and dommain name in the background behind the login screen but I cannot get past it. They will shoot me at work if I tell them this. It's a laptop I bring home to do work from home.

The hint is the domain deal. Ask your IT people what the domain is.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

Oh, don't tell them the silly stuff you did, just say you don't know what happened, It just broke.

It is possible that you actually change the system from a domain to a workstation. If so then you'd need to try to change it back. Sometimes you really will need to have domain access to return it.

You don't want to reset password either in this case. It might make things worse.

Lastly is the how it needs to authenticate with the domain. If you lost stored credentials, well, you need your it people to fix it.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

You apparently did something that you weren't supposed to do & were locked out because of it. You're going to have to inform your employer or IT people to get it straightened out.

You didn't mention which email you were trying to enable but isn't there a web based version? Too late now, but something for the future.

I know what the domain name is :-) - I'm thinking that I need the administrator password to go back in and click "Domain" vs. "Work Group" or visa versa.. The trials and tribulations of learning this tech stuff. I've always had issues with this laptop and they have had to reset the windows password several times since at work, it changes every so often and this laptop never matches it. So it ends up I have a Windows Password for the laptop locally, then another network passcode to access anything on the network. From what I've read, when I get the administrator password I can just go back in and undo what I did. I can get into BIOS and reboot etc.. I think this laptop has issues.. That's why they gave it to me lol.. I have a temp VPN key I use for it.. so I can login to our network.. which works fine.. as I only have to do it for emergencies..

Not sure what I did.... This laptop has been really weird.. Every so often we have to change our windows password - at work on my desktop. When I do that.. then need to use the laptop the laptop passcode is out of sync with my desktop passcode and it causes all sorts of problems. This laptop was given to me to acces a certain system on an emergency basis.. it's not something I bring back and forth.. I use my desktop at work.. no docking station.. I'm ready to give it back to them and say fix it! but it seems so simple.. I can see the domain name, I can see the pc name and I know what my password used to be.. for the laptop.. very frustrating. I am seriously thinking of going back to school again.. for pc's.. Thanks for your reply.
