Okay, I give up.... sigh. I have been working on this computer for days and have had no success. I've tried the advice posted and get to the recovery console and then when I type in the format c:/fs:nfts
it gives me errors about invalid perimeters or switches.. I can't remember what it said to be honest because I've seen so many errors these past few days. So, to avoid putting my foot right through this computer screen... I'm gonna give up and be stuck with my computer not running right.... sigh.

What are you wanting to do?

If you want to convert from FAT32 to NTFS then at the Command Prompt (Accessoreies) type
convert C: /fs:ntfs

If you are trying to start fresh and you already have an NTFS partition you want to erase, that command doesn't work. You have to DELETE the existing partition first using the diskpart tool in the Recovery Console, then create and format a new partition. The format command in the Console only works if you are changing to a different format than what is already there, and probably won't work at all if there is an operating system present. Kind of a safety feature to prevent accidental erasure of the operating system.

Hi Nancy,

If you're still out there.

Is the partition ntfs, if so try this-->>

Download delpart.exe to delete the ntfs partition. Then you can use your 9x boot disk to fdisk/format the drive and install whatever you want.

YOU CAN DOWNLOAD dELPART FROM---
http://www.russelltexas.com/delpart.htm

##############
A little more info about the delpart application:

Delpart allows you to remove an ntfs partition. Removing the NTFS partition erases everything from the drive. Your data, settings, drivers and software will be deleted, erased, destroyed and will need to be reinstalled. Back it all up.

Download and Copy delpart.exe to your windows 98 boot disk.

Restart the computer leaving the boot disk inserted. At the A:prompt run "delpart.exe".

Follow on screen instructions to Delete the ntfs partition.
Use the Alt key to access the file menu from delparts GUI.

Choose save. Then Choose Exit. You will return to the A:prompt.

Your NTFS partition is gone now you can use FDISK/FORMAT
tools to get the drive ready for windows 9X.
Delpart's GUI is easy to navigate. It takes the guess work out of removing an NTFS partition.
