Specs: Windows XP
Do I have to update to Service Pack 2 before I can get an internet connection so that I can receive all the necessary updates? I looked in the Windows files and it seems that many of the files are missing for Windows and the Connection Wizard

You have to install the drivers for your hardware before you can connect to the internet - nothing to do with Service Packs. You haven't mentioned any details of your system, but the best source is the manufacturer's website - look for support/driver download.

Johnr is correct. If you did a clean install, you most likely dont have many of your device drivers. You'll need to install drivers for your NIC to be able to get on the Internet.

And after you've installed the drivers & can get online, you should update to SP3, not SP2. And I suggest you install it before running Windows Update.
