Comment:

hey guys, i'm desperately in need of help. here's the story:
i was installing a game on my computer. after i install it, i tried to play the game. but my computer froze. so i did the ctrl alt delete thing. then i ended the program, but i saw that the cpu usage is still high so i went to the processes tab and accidently ended something that starts with an 'exxxxxx' after that, almost all of my icons didn't have it's original picture and most of them changed to .lnk extension. it won't even recgonise .exe.

for example, winamp is a lightening bolt, but now and most of the other icons have another icon pic like a piece of paper with a small window in the middle. i know it's hard to imagine, you know when windows can't recongnise a program/file it has 'that' icon?

so i freaked out not knowing what to do. so i just restart my computer. and weird stuff just popped up. like when i clicked my IE icon, it pops a message saying :
Windows cannot open this file:
file: Internet Explorer.lnk
and the 2 options of whether to search it on the web or choose from the list.

even my icons beside my clock is gone!

and now i can't even open my IE window with the new icon. i know you're thinking then how can i type to you. well i just picked the search for it in the web option and cried out here for help!!

well i finally manage to uninstall the game. with other cleaning programs that i got.

please help me... i'm just so depress right now. i even tried the system restore thing but when i typed :C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe in the run bar, it pops up the same window. so i tried to find the system restore icon/file in the system32 directry and reset my computer to an earlier date. for a few minutes, the icons are back. but i can't click on them though. then after a few more minutes my icons still have that unknown file pic. so the same .lnk extention appeared. please help me. i know i'm hopless right now... please tell me what to do next.

btw, u know the blue screen when we log on to windows, and u have to type a password to log in? well an additional window popped up with weird symbols. and i have to click 'ok' or 'close' to get pass that

please please please help me... would be GREATLY apprieciated

ps. does this means i have to erase everthing?! please not... am i dead meat? this is a new computer.
and sorry for not providing the 'correct' cpu/ram thing because i can't open to the 'properties' of 'my computer' or open 'system' in the control panel. i just digged it out from the papers. but i'm pretty sure it's 1GB of RAM

thanks in advance

if that don't work go to RUN and type exactly
sfc /scannow

then insert the original xp cd in the cdrom and click ok. it will takle about 30 to 45 minutes depending of your cpu speed but this will repair all corrupted system files.

I forgot to mention that most systems come
with a 1 time backup to CD-r or DVD-r.

You should read your original documents or
manuals that came with your system to create that set of disks.

They will restore your system to original specifications as from the factory but,it beats the alternative.

That is usually the first thing you do when you get a new computer, first fully read the instructions.

The OS Recovery CD utility can be found in the Programs | Dell Accessories folder.
A complete set of instructions for using the utility can be found in the Dell Knowledge Base article:

Still a good idea to check the above sie and see if you can make a copy of OS recovery CD's for an unknown emergency that could happen.

Also glad (sabertooth) helped you get it fixed.

You can delete those files at your convinience, hopefully you'll never need them again but if you do at least you now where to get them.........;-)

Regarding the IE issue, are you implying - it doesn't launch or it launches to the infamous "page cannot be displayed" window?

Dell ships new computers with a hidden partition called PC Restore By Symantec. This will completely restore your computer to the exact same condition as the day you took it out of the box. I've used it before myself, after I totally botched up another computer of mine.
Now.... I would only recommend this as a last resort because it will completely wipe your system clean, and restore everything to as new condition. So that means you would want to backup all your impoetant files; photos; music files; documents....

But it is there if you are completely fryustrated and wish to simply restore it to as new condition.
The link above is Dell's article on how to use the Dell Pc Restore. It's a process of hitting the f-11 key at boot-up and following the prompts.
Like I said, I've used this Pc Restore and it worked beautifully for me. But of course I had to re-install my favorite programs all over again; and re-install my important files that I previously backed up to dvd and cd disks with my dvd burner.

Hope this might help you out a bit; good luck....

What about other browsers like Opera or Firefox, do those work?

If they do, you should try IEFIX to resolve the problem and also don't forget to reset your Winsock stacks.

You do that by simply clicking Start - Run & typing netsh Winsock reset in the box and hitting OK. Do make sure you reboot when all this is done.
