Greetings,
I am having a problem, I try to run Defrag on my computer (I have XP Home edition) and it tell me "Defragmentation of (C:) has been aborted due to inconsistencies that were detected in the filesystem. Please run CHKDSK or SCANDISK on (C:) to repair these inconsistencies, then run Disk Defragmenter again."
I run CHKDSK and nothing happens... couldnt find Scandisk so I went to My Computer/Rick-Click on (C:)/Properties/Tools/Error Checking/Check now... Did a restart and it said everything is clear and fine, and defrag still doesnt work.
Any Ideas.. I really dont know what to do anymore on this subject, any advice will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Matthew

Same thing happened to me before Matthew,
only thing is when i tried running Chkdsk it wouldn't work so the best thing i can do it tell you to restart your computer and press F8 to load up a boot-up screen then press F8 again and goto the file that says for you to system restore to last good point or something like that and go back to where it was working good and stuff..... hope this helps!

CHKDSK and Scandsk are the same. Scandsk for Win9x and Chkdsk (or Error checking) for XP. Chkdsk sets up in XP but has to run from a DOS mode so will run at the next boot. That procedure should take care of any problems you have on your drive and Defrag should run. If not have a look at how much free space you have on your drive. Defrag requires 15% free space to run.
When setting Chkdsk to run, check both options before pressing Start.
Hope this helps.

Get yurself a copy of either DISKEEPER, or SPEEDDISK. Much better at defragging than Xp's pathetic scratchings at the surface :-)

Try defrag in safe mode.
press f8 while booting up and choose safe mode from the menu.
Hope that helps
