hi everybody
i have had to replace a faulty router at work today that we use for dialing into a digital video recorder that records cctv in a large block of flats. when setup correctly, we can connect to the site using a static ip address and user name, view the cameras live, reconfigure and archive footage from the "divar" from my hq.with my new router, i have connected to my isp and am able to go online with a laptop no problems, my isp has provided me with a static ip address which ive confirmed with myipaddress.com, i can ping the router on this ip address when i connect a laptop directly to the router but back at my HQ when i try to ping it i get a timeout! (needless to say i cant connect to my divar)
the router is a bt voyager 210, i have forwarded port 80 on my router to the ip address of my divar. and disabled ip filter in advanced setup/configuration, which as far as im aware is the terminology used to disable the firewall?
why am i unable to ping my router when it seems to be fully functional??
in addition can anyone tell me what the settings should be for my internet protocol properties and explain to me how my static ip and my chosen ip for my divar should affect those settings? ive never really got my head round how to set up ip's subnet masks, default gateways ect...
hope to hear from you all soon as ive gotta go back there in the morning and have another go at getting it up and running!!!
dan

forgive my ignorance but i cant see anything on that list thats relevant to my problem? can you be a little more specific?

"why am i unable to ping my router"
Because being a good router by default its configured not to return icmp packets [ping]. You have to find the place in the router to enable it."divar" is DVR as in digital video recorder
"disabled ip filter in advanced setup/configuration, which as far as im aware is the terminology used to disable the firewall?"
You have to read the routers manual to know what turns off the firewall [don't turn it off but properly configure it]
Are you ready for where Microsoft wants you to go today?

thanks for your input wanderer, you correct that my divar is in fact a Digital Video Recorder, but this particular dvr is manufactured by bosch and is called a "divar". for future use if anybody should stumble accross this thread in the future, the solution was as follows- for the voyager 210 you need to go into the advanced setup and click on the menu for remote access, check all the radios on that page and apply!! it was so simple once i opened remote access but the terminology lead me to believe that this was for some kind of remote assistance!!
thanks for you suggestions guys
dan
