I can't install programs under my profile. Each time I try, I get an error message that reads..
Can't run 16 bit windows program
Cannot find file C:\docume~1\Carlab\Local Settings\Temp\WZS6A.tmp\setup.exe(or one of its components). Check to ensure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.OK, this is probably my fault...LOL.
When I got the computer a friend set it up. I was unfamiliar with XP. I didn't like the name he used as my account, so I went into windows explorer and renamed it there. Apparently that was a no-no.
I had to create a new user account after that and reset up everything and move all my files to the new account that I'd just set up, but it hasn't worked properly since. Each time I try to install something, it won't let me.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Are those older programs?
XP likes it's things, as most are newer and must be XP compatible.
Check your EVENT VIEWER for clues.

I guess most of them are old(er) but periodically it seems I have the same problem with anything I try to install. yesterday I tried to install AVG (anti-virus) and got the same reposnse. How do I check the event viewer and what will it tell me?

Carla
Log on using the first account he set up. This is your administrator account.
Then go to user accounts in the control panel and give the account you use now administrative rights. That should do it.
To get to event viewer, etc. Right click my computer/manage.

Thanks stump but I already have admin rights on this new profile. I've been doing some reading on the microsoft site and apparently this 16 bit problem is common with XP. I just need to find newer software.:)
