I was wondering if you could help me? for about two weeks now I have not been able to download anything from the internet. at first I thought it must be the site I was using and just forgot about it. then maybe the next day I'd try another site and the same thing would happen again. when I clicked the link to download I'd get about two bars on the progress bar then the whole page freezes. I have to press control, alt, delete to exit the page. this now happens to every download I try. I have looked at my settings and most things are ticked 'enable' (can you please tell me in Internet Options, Security Settings, Active X Controls and Plugins) which things should say enable, disable, or block. most of mine seem to be enable including file download. my isp said everything was all right at their end and that I should talk to my pc supplier. although he was helpful he didn't solve my problem he said I'd have to put my re-load cd in. I am using a sygate firewall and Internet Explorer is ticked to allow. any suggestions would be most appreciated. I've even restored my computer but it only seems to go back a week. and my problem is at least two weeks old. I'm also use a pop up stopper but have had no problems with it. also in my settings it is ticked to allow downloads in my IE internet settings.
help please

Also, being the paranoid maniac that I am, make sure your antivirus index is updated and run a scan on your entire C drive. Just to make sure. There are "joke" viruses that do stuff like that and you spend literally weeks trying things until you discover it.

I have the same trouble with system restore, it won't let you go back far enough, if anyone knows the answer to this problem, I would like to know.
I think you have to create dates to be able to go back.

Windows do system checkpoint everynow and then and creates restore point when ever you install new softwares (only if they are big enough or fit certain criteria). However, it doesn't mean that if you can see a restore point, then you can restore to that day. System restore will only work if you have not installed any un-unistallable fixes since the restore point is created.

You are obviously capable of downloading things. As whenever you browse a webpage it is actually downloaded onto your hard drive. Shouldnt be any different with other file.
....are you using dialup?

hi to everyone that replied
a friend suggested I try and reinstall IE 6 over the top of my current version. when I found a site offering the download I clicked on the link to download and the same thing happened as before. it tries to do it then the page just freezes with a page not responding message. funily enough I can still download updates from microsoft but not from anywhere else. I'll have to see if I can get a copy of IE6 from someone and try that.
thanks

I just ran into the exact same problem, don't know what caused it, but I did find a solution. Under Tools...Internet Options...I deleted all my temporary internet files, cookies, and history. I think I just needed to delete the temporary internet files as it took more than 5 minutes to complete the task. Maybe it was all full? Or maybe I had meesed it up?
Best of luck,
Jonathan
