I made a network at home, everything is working, the main computer is downstairs and the 2nd comp is upstairs, i got internet on both. After that i wanted to make a network so i can play files upstairs from my other computer (downstairs). The problem is: i can connect from my main computer to my computer upstairs. but i can't connect from my computer upstairs to my main computer.( when i type the computer name): \\Vanrhijn in the adress... it gives an error: \\Vanrhijn isnt accesable, It's possible you dont have the rights to this networksource. Please contact the admin of the server if you would like to know if you have accesrights.
Can't fidn the networkpath.
I tried everything... the workgroups both called MSHOME, both computers havent got firewalls, file and printsharing are turned on.
The main computer has got Windows XP home
Pentium 4 120GB 512mb memory (SP1)
the computer upstairs has got Windows XP pro
Pentium 2 2GB 128mb memory (SP1)Can anyone help me please!

you have to choose what you want to share on the other computer. Once you make a network the only file that you can access is the shared doc. you will need to go to the basement computer and make the C drive shared.
AMD 3200
A7N8X-Deluxe
1 Gig Corsair
Swiftech Liquid Cooled
X850XT PE

I think you have to create a user on the main system, equal to the username on the system upstairs.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP!
Sorry, I do not check for private messages

What shows in My Network Places? Can you see each computer from the other. You should be able to access the other computer from My Network Places (shared folders only).

hey there, u need to share the folder or drive you want to access, then in the shared folder you need to define the permissions, that´s the reason u cant find the folder, because it´s not shared, and you dont have permissions on the folder, because in a workgroup environment the objects are local,it´s difrent than a domain,so,first: share the folder, second, in the shared folder properties dialog box, define the permissions, u can define everyone have full control for example.
Warning: dont deny permissions, because deny permissions override allow permissions, and be carefull, because in the properties dialog box of the shared folder, u have the sharing tab and the security tab.
The sharing tab it´s the shared folder permissions, and the security tab are the NTFS permissions, and the most restrictive permissions of both is the finally permissions( this means that,if you allow everyone read permission in the sharing tab and the on the security tab you define that everyone have full control, the most resctrictive permission will be allow,so everyone will have only allow permission ok?done?:) if u can help you more, my mail is: luisldsgb@hotmail.com

And don't forget about Security permissions if your fs is NTFS. If you share any folder and don't set user security restrictions, you won't be able to access this folder from another comp.

tleible and Suem, I know what you mean but how can i share them if i cant even connect to the computer? i need to acces the SHARED DOCS map, from de basement computer i can connect to my comp upstairs, but from upstairs i cant connect to my basement comp!! i dont know what is blocking it but do know its not a firewall, cause i turned them all OFF.

ham30, I dont think that's the solution but i'll try.

terii, At both computers from the network places i can see each computer from the computers, but with the comp (upstairs) i cant connect to the main computer (downstairs). when i try to it gives the following error: http://www.freewebs.com/mysticalf3v3r/images/netwerk.JPG

silvaluis Ive already shared my E: partition and some maps like MY documents, but i just don't see them in THIS COMPUTER ( where A:\, C:\ etc is stored ) at my school they have many different partitions like E:\,F:,\G:\ <---- is exactly what i want.So the problems are: 1. I cant connect to my main computer by getting into the shared documents map.( its pingable though )
2. I can't see partions i shared on my main computer ( like E:\ where all my music is stored )I hope anyone got better solutions?

ok i found the problem i cant define the permissions, maybe because i have xp home at my main computer? the only thing i see is this: http://www.freewebs.com/mysticalf3v3r/images/problemmmm.JPG
so that must be the problem, i need win xp pro to allow other computers accessing this one.

dude........ the permissions need to be set locally not remotely ok? dont forget when u try to share the folder or the volume, that u cant have the simply file sharing active, you need to use the NTFS file system ok? and then, in the other computer acess it by going to the run tab and entre this syntax \\host ip adress\
got it?
then you´ll be able to acess the shared objects.
