I cannot log on to my computer

Specs: Windows XP Home, 504

My laptop froze with a hardware error screen and had to be shut down. Since that time when it restarts, a 1 inch square box appears with an X inside a red circle and an okay box ... any key causes the computer to log off and save settings only to return to the same opening screen with the X- box.

I can access my files in safe mode, so all is not lost ... YET. I have tried to download my files to an external hard drive, but it is a USB 'plug and play' device w/ no installation software and my PC will not recognize it.

While in safe-mode, I opened all devices in device manager, there were no exclamation points indicating errors. When I try to run system restore, I get a message stating: "System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again." Restarting the computer only takes you back to the screen where the X box appears with no way to navigate around it.


I ran the extended diagnostic test (F12 @ startup) and all tests passed. When it restarted, I still could not get past the welcome screen and the box reappeared.

When the system crashed (went to the blue error screen), I was sending an email from yahoo and nothing else was open other an another Internet Explorer window. The error message said if this was the first time the message had appeared to restart the computer and it should restart normally. However, now I cannot get beyond the blue welcome screen before the X box appears requiring kit any key to move forward, then it saves your settings and starts over and when you click the desired user (there is only 1 to choose from), the X box returns and the process begins again.

I am also getting a frequent error message stating that I have SensApi.dll is missing. Could this have anything to do with my issues and how do I reinstill SensApi.dll ?

All MicroSoft updates were current at the time of the crash. Of course, it is out of warranty. I have scoured online forums and not been able to come up with any results. I don't know what my problem is to begin looking for a solution.

I have almost the same problem except I try and log onto windows with the correct password. It shows that windows is logging on and then it says saving settings and reverts back to log in screen. Can't even go through safe mode, as it doesn't work either.

G newman, you should start your own thread, but first search this site. Other people with your problem have posted that question before.
