How are you trying to get it to run? If you run a little script from the Run line, that will happen. You may want to open a command prompt and run it from there.
There is also the Compatability Mode option and of course there is always the chance that that particular DOS program will not run in XP.

XP is built on the NT platform, not on top of DOS (like win98). XP has no DOS under it...the command prompt is just a simple dos emulator with rudimentary operations.

what program are you trying to install? Yes do the compatibility setup. go to the file from programs and right click on the exe icon and click on compatiblility and choose 95 or 98 and disable the visual themes. After you have done that you can try to click on the program that you are trying to run. If that doesn't work then I suggust getting up graded programs.

XP comes with the minimum amount of commands and no amount of clicking on the comatibility mode is going to get it to provide any more than it has. Choosing 95 or 98 is not going to magically provide the same command base that shipped with those platforms.
