i am running on a new month-old cicero notebook with an OEM win xp home version. last night i left the computer running fine and then this morning i went to launch internet explorer and i got a very odd error message with non-alphanumeric characters, then tried an "alt, control, delete" and the same message. When i restarted the computer, at the blue logon screen, there was no user account, no guest, no nothing. After restarting and launching in safe mode, i created a "test" account, and then restarted using the "test" account. When i navigated to the "documents and settings" folder i noticed that the original user account still appeared and it seemed that all its contents were still there. However, i could not re-establish this user account. Is this most likely some form of virus, trojan, etc.? or is it possible this is a windows-based error (which I am weary of using a "cicero" machine)? Also, i had previously created an additional logical partition from the single hard drive for use as a backup drive. Now that I have done a complete system recovery of the machine (out of my worry about virusses, and as the machine was showing virus characteristics), I would like to know whether that logical "backup" drive (again part of the same physical drive) must also be formatted in order to be absolutely free of virusses. In the same vein, I backed up data to an additional hard drive on another computer on my home network. Does this also then mean that that drive too is likely infected? Is there a way i can tell (norton antivirus 2003...? is this a surefire test when it is up to date?) And lastly, what about data backed up via burning to a cd from this computer, would these files presumably also be infected? If yes to all these questions, then how the heck can i safely backup files and then restore my machine once it becomes infected??? thanks, deeply perplexed.

you can look at what you have running, at the url below:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/

You may have a virus or trojan or worm or adware or some other sort of malware.
Run an AV scan, and download AdAware and Spybot, install them, update them, and run them. Delete anything that looks suspicious. Some advise deleting everything because it's all reversible. Also get Spyblaster which keeps a list of bad stuff on your computer and blocks them from being installed (theoretically). Be sure your independent (not MS’s) firewall is enabled and that your AV software is up to date.

thanks for the help, i have run spybot, adware, deleting everything suggested, have enabled the "innoculate" feature in spybot, and have also run pandaware antivirus, did a manual update and run of norton antivirus, and Trojan Remover.
