I've had XPPro upgrade for over a year with no problems whatsoever. Tonight after booting up, I found that my modem did not exist. I tried various ways to install it, but to no avail. Eventually after rebooting windows showed that it had finally found my new hardware and then I got a BSOD (Driver IRQL Not Less Than Equal - error code Stop: 000000d1). I pulled the modem out and everytime I rebooted it said it found my new modem and in approximately 10 seconds, it was BSOD. What do I do? I even put the modem back in to see if that changed anything, but it didn't. I am unable to do anything while in windows so how do I solve this outside of XP? I've tried booting in safe mode and every time I try it freezes during the boot in safe mode. Help.

ok...click start, then help and support..then find system restore on the screen and click that. you will see a line that says restore to a earlier date..click that...find a date from before you started having your problems...click next..it should take a few minutes then reboot...let me know how it goes.

You've had your computer unplugged for a while. I'm thinking you may have a weak battery on your motherboard for your BIOS chip. When you had it unplugged it may have lost some settings. Do you remember ever having to change any settings in your BIOS over the years? I would try clearing my CMOS and loading optimized defaults from the BIOS set up screen. Your BIOS assigns IRQ's to your hardware and then when it hands the system over to windows, windows rearranges them. Oh. And you can buy a new Motherboard battery at Radio shack for about $3.00.

Instead of doing a format and reinstall. Try doing a repair install instead. That way you say most if not all of your files. To do this. Boot from your XP O.S. CD and during setup you will be given an option to do a repair install.

To clear your cmos. Turn the computer off and unplug it from the wall. Press the power button to drain the motherboard and then take the case off. Remove the little silver nickel size battery from your motherboard. Leave it out for about 30 sec. Put the battery back into the holder and put the cover back on, plug your computer in to a power source, and start it up with the power button. You have just cleared your CMOS.

Basically, I'm in an endless cycle. Whether the BIOS is set right or not, the modem is in the PCI slot or not, or I'm screaming or not, every time I boot into windows I have about 15 seconds until BSOD. For some reason when I try to boot from cd, it doesn't. It asks if I want to boot from cd and I hit enter and then it boots from the HDD. What gives?

Go into BIOS and set your first boot device to CDROM
