I've had this problem for a long time, tryed everything.
my PC will not recognize a usb mouse or keyboard. all other usb products work ok, camera, printer etc.
i was wondering if its because i have no human interface device listed in device manager or should that install when the mouse is plugged in??
also could the problem be because i am using a sata converter from my mobo to hdd??

You may need to enable USB Mouse/Keyboard in BIOS first. Then shut down. remove the PS2 devices, connect the USB devices and startup.
You may need also to instal USB KB & Mouse drivers although I believe XP normally has default drivers that will work with many USB input devices.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Are you attempting to connect the devices to the PS/2 ports using adapters?

obviously you are having a bios issue, you might need to update your bios or install the correct driver, if that doesnt help then were having a hardware issue.

Just to clarify your problem. You are stating that you can't get a USB mouse or KBoard to install while in Windows. The BIOS should have nothing to do with that, if that is the case. The BIOS affects the functioning of USB devices prior to booting into Windows.

every things enabled in the bios usb support for keyboard and mouse

hears what iv actually done to try to fix the problem.

unplugged all usb devices
uninstalled all usb related software
rebooted in safe mode
uninstalled all usb controllers, host controllers, root hubs etc.
rebooted in normal mode and installed all usb related software.
i then pluged in the usb mouse with the same results

And to further clarify, the SAME exact USB ports work with other hardware? Are you connecting directly to the port, or to a hub?

I understood, but it made me think about an external hub. So I take it the answer is that the same ports work with other hardware and no you aren't using a hub to connect the KB 7 mouse? What brand are the devices? Are they wireless or wired?
