Help me please. Okay I recently got a new computer and transfered all my important files from my old one to my new one. Well I found some reviews for a regestry program called TuneXp 1.5 that does edits to the regestry without you touching it, and decided to give it a try. Well after I ran it I rebooted as instructed. From the reboot something seemed weird. The XP style was gone. I tried to turn it back on, and it said the Theme service was disabled. So I check my process and all the Microsft Service were disabled. And I went to Admin Tools and I wasn't able to enable them. I got many differnt types of errors. Is there a way I can fix this. I would reformat, but I have important files that are over a gig, and the network service wont turn on. Help....!

Use system restore. From the safe mode if you need to.

Open tunexp and see if it has a restore option. Then enable system restore.

Did the registry editor tell you to make a backup of your registry before you ran it. It should have. This would be the easy way to undo any changes made.

I might want to add this. When I try to enable System restore it says the dependency service is disabled. Does anyone know what that service is?

AFAIK the dependency service for System Restore is Remote Procedure Call (RPC). By the way, I checked out the web site for TuneXp. They offer no Support or Help. The FAQ page they have has nothing to do with TuneXp.

I think I may have found a solution. Tell me how well it will work. I'm not to familiar with partitions, but I have a basic idea so maybe someone can give me the better details. Okay I will create a partition on some blank area on the HDD. Move the important file. Then reformat the partition with the OS on it. Move the files to the new os install then delete the other partition. If that will work can someone give me better instructions on how to do that?

And this is why I don't bother trying to "tune" the registry. It's not worth the risk.

I suggest you do this rather than messing with partitions.
How to do a system repair.--Boot from the xp cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except the xp updates. Unless you have a slipstream sp1 cd you will have to d/l sp1 and all subsequent updates. You MUST have at least SP1 installed and the updates for security reasons. Be sure the firewall and A/V is active before going online as you will be susceptible to sasser and msblaster. If you don't want SP2 go to autopatcher.com and d/l SP1 and subsequent updates.

Press Enter to setup windows. See if this helps

1=Set BIOS to boot from the CD/ROM.
2=Look for the prompt to "Press any key to boot from CD/ROM (Do so now as you have only seconds).(Ignore if prompt appears on any reboot)
3=Windows setup, Loads files.
4=You will see Windows XP home or Pro setup.
5=To setup windows press "Enter."
6=Press F8 to accept license.
7=To repair selected Windows Installation press "R."
8=Copies files to the Hard drive. 9=Computer will re-boot--Do not use the use the "press any key" command at the prompt.
10=follow the on-screen instructions..
11=Enter the "product Key" (Note- It is possible to enter a different product key from the one that was used to install the OS you are repairing but you will run into Licensing problems with MS.
12=The computer may re-boot again during the install, but do not use "the press any key" command at the prompt or you get to do it all over again.
13=Follow on screen instructions.

Forgot to add that unless you have copied the WPA.DBL file to a floppy you will have to re-activate your copy of windows.

DTC? The Distributed Transaction Coordinator (DTC) system service is responsible for coordinating transactions that are distributed across multiple computer systems and resource managers, such as databases, message queues, file systems, or other transaction-protected resource managers. The DTC system service is required if transactional components are configured through COM+. It is also required for transactional queues in Message Queuing (also known as MSMQ) and SQL Server operations that span multiple systems.

Is this what you use?

Under the scenario of the worse case, are you willing to wipe everything out and reinstall Windows afresh? Do you have retail Windows XP CD?

Yeah I am capable, but unfortunatly there are like 2-4 files that I really would like to keep from being removed. They are rather large so I cant burn them to a CD. I could buy some DVD's but I dont know if the windows burning program will work.

You might try downloading and creating a Bart PE CD. This is a bootable CD that boots to an environment similar to Windows. It would give you both hard drive and network access so you can copy the files from the screwed up computer to the good one.

One idea anyway.

You could try Knoppix Linux. This distro of Linux installs to and runs from one CDR. It is a full featured group of programs in addition to linux. Even if it ends up not helping your problem this is worth having. Being open source it is a free DL. Be apprised it is big, 699MB. You can also order CDs for a nominal fee. Google Knoppix.

Hmm, I've not usually had a problem with BartPE recognizing network cards.

What you could do is download them from the manufacturer's website and add them to the ISO. This page tells you how to do it. At least it's pretty easy to rebuild the ISO using his programs.

Knoppix may also help, though also may have driver issues. I also don't know if Samba is enabled by default in Knoppix for Windows file sharing, so you might have to enable it.

If you want to use disk spanning go to www.rarlab.com and download Winrar. After Winrar is installed move all the files you want to save into a folder on your desktop. Right click this folder and select "Add to archive". Under the compression method dropdown menu select "Store". If time isn't an issue and you want to save some disks set it to "best". Under the "Split to volumes, bytes" select "700M - CD-700M" or "650M - CD-650M" depending on the size of your blanks. Now check the "Create SFX archive" box. This box causes Winrar to make the archive self extracting. Hit OK and Winrar will start creating cd sized chucks of your data. Burn these disks and label them according to the part number. You will see what I mean after you have created your archive.

After you have reinstalled Xp pop in the first cd and run the extractor. Click browse and select a folder on your hard drive. If you don't do this it will try to extract you files onto the cd and fail. Click install and it will begin extracting your data. When it ask for the next volume put the next cd in and click OK.

Hope this helps,
Sandman
