I haven't been able to use explorer in months, I've been having to use Netscape. All I get with explorer is a 404 page, or this page cannot be displayed. Not one site will come up. I've tried everthing, incuding doing a download of another copy of Explorer6 plus an explorer6 update(ie6setup). After I download it, I can't get the new program to run as it keeps coming up saying it has detected a newer version of IE and can't continue!! I've been to the microsoft site and continue to get not be able to find a solution to this. I've also done a little check they reccomend using "run - sfc/scannow" with the windwos CD in and this doesn't help either. Any other suggestions??? Thanks in advance for your help!

Are you using dial-up, cable, or DSL? I assume you've already gone through the rigamarole of clicking Tools | Internet Options, then clicking the Connections tab and making sure everything there was OK?

This should fix it for you. Once you edit the registry it will show IE is not installed. Then just go to microsoft and download it again. All should be fixed.

I highly suggest you make sure you have no spyware or trojans before you do so.

Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet Explorer 6
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
When you try to reinstall the same version of Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:
Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system.
Setup cannot continue.
To avoid this error message and reinstall the same version of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, follow these steps: 1. While you are logged on as an administrator, click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify.

To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
To reinstall only Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}
4. Change the value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK.
5. Quit Registry Editor, and then install Internet Explorer 6.

I am new to this site. Hope someone can help. I have been expiriencing big problems with the internet latetly. I have an HP pavillion running 2k xp, using a dial modem with Juno. When ever I sign on I get sometimes as many as 4 browser screens all working at the same time none getting any where. Sometimes I am lucky and can get rid of them but more often the suystem freezes and I have to shut down. Other times I can open the task manager and I find 5 or six applications not responding. This becomes very stressful.

I have just met the enemy and it is us.
