I'm quite new to XP x64. I have just installed x64 a few days ago. Just found out now that the icon for HTML(.html, .htm, .xml) were set to
Windows' default icon. I don't remember exactly when and how it became
like that.I can't see the default Internet
Explorer file icon for HTML files. I tried many ways but it didn't
work. I havn't installed many apps and no spyware or ActiveX controls
(only several including Flash, Windows Update, etc)
And in Folder option, i can edit it there, but on the icon no change.
I have also trid registry fix, and been to registry under root. .html but no joy there either. Also tried TWEAK UI from microsoft, and did run reinstall icon. Same again. Getting tired of this now...
What do you guys think is the problem?
Any ideas, or do i have to reinstall again...

Maybe this works for you.
Save an HTML file in your temp folder.
Open Explore, go to the save HTML file, and right click it.
In the context menu choose open with and select Internet Exlorer.
Also set the checkbox to set this application as default to open such files. Also search for the file IconCache.db in your profile folder and delete that file.
After that you may have to restart the computer. This should fix your problem.

well i have kind of figured out why this happen. I installed some registry cleaner software, which i used under my XP 32 bit system. On x64 bit system they don't really work that well. One keep deleting registry files that was suppose to be safe to remove, but obivously deleted icon files in registry for several files. I reformated, and have no just skipped all those reg software, that only looks like they work on XP 32 bit.
But what does that IconCache.db actually do?

Here the name is program.
It caches the Icons you've used in the past.
So you may have deleted icon files, used for links at the desktop and the icons are still there.
You'll recognize that the icon files is deleted, when you delete the IconCache.db file and press the F5 key on the desktop.
Then, links that are missing the original icon file are shown with a standard icon for links, that has no icon assigned to it.This file gets bigger and bigger, the longer you're using your Windows and play arround with alot of software.
