Comment:

Does anyone have an HTML character for the long 'a'? Or any other vowel for that matter. In case I'm not clear, I want to type an a with a long line over it.

Thanks.

ā = & # 2 5 7 ;

(added spaces so it wouldn't be interpreted)

Michael -

Perfect! Many thanks. Why couldn't I find that?

mattie - Thanks, but those are accents aigus, and while they help designate pronunciation, they aren't indicative of vowel length: i.e., long or short. I believe the mark I was looking for is called a macron.

but since i'm using an irish keyboard layout i prefer to call them 'fadas' or 'acute-accented vowels' :-)

That's something I never knew. Out of interest, I Googled 'fada' and came up with this interesting article on Wikipedia. I love languages and know little about Irish or Gaelic, so you've taught me a lot. Thanks.

PS - Fada was the brand name of an old radio at least in America in the forties and fifties and maybe earlier.
