HP XP with SP3 will not play or record CD/DVD

Specs: Windows XP
It has worked for years. No error messages come up. Have un and re installed drivers according to instructions. It worked briefly and then not again.

It's possible the laser lens is dirty or dead. Go to a store that sells computer stuff (even stores like Walmart) and look for a disc drive cleaner. I have a few Memorex CDs that have a brush on the disc. As the disc plays, the lens gets cleaned and only takes a couple minutes.

Fortunately, internal CD/DVD burners only cost about $20 on Newegg and they're usually easy to replace. Some computer cases make it difficult, but you'll also need to make sure you buy one that matches your cables: SATA (4 cables) or IDE (a ribbon).

Thank you I will try that. After I posted the question it worked twice and then not again. Sonic player used to come on screen right away when I put in a CD but now I have to manually bring it up and twice when I did that it worked.
