HP Scanjet 3200c Compatibility

I am having problems with my HP ScanJet 3200c which stops halfway through a scan if I have my HP Photosmart 1000 hooked up through it. Both are working on one parallel port (printer goes through port on scanner, scanner to comp.). When I disconnect my printer and restart everything is fine. My question is, is there any way to fix this problem (there are no patches on the HP site, as well as no mention of the problem I have).
Would using a USB cable for the printer, and not having it go through the scanner, fix the problem?
