HP Print Spooler error

I have an HP Pavilion with Windows XP. I have a print spooler error and have not been able to get a printer to work on this computer recently. I've researched and tried everything I could find to fix it with no success. I have Norton virus on the computer and keep it current. I run scan, defrag, and keep as much junk off it as possible. Can anyone give me suggestions?
