Comment:

I have a HP pavillion dv5000 laptop.
Running Windows XP

When i turn it on I get the 'Windows did not restart properly screen'and no matter which of the options I choose, i see the windows logo loading after a short time the blue screen apears for a split second and then its back to the first screen all over again.

iv gone into BIOS, i ran the HD self test, and both the short and long test fail before really even doing anything.

I tried Ultimate boot CD on both a dvd and CD and neither do anything, i put the cd drive at the top of the boot order and still no luck
CD works fine on my other PC though

i dont have the original XP cd and im lost on what to do now?

Iv been on here trying to figure it out for hours :sigh:

Any help would be appreciated!

You could try reseating the hard drive and the RAM.

Yep you could try that. But I suspect the hard drive as being bad, especially if it fails the self test.

I agree with post #2 The hard drive is bad.
I had a customer just last week with a HP Pavilion dv6140us with almost the same problem. Ran the Hard drive test and it failed bought a new hard drive and ran the Recovery disk and found the same problem after it finished, went into BIOS and ran the test on the new Hard drive and it passed with no problems so then found out that the HP Pavilion dv6140us had a second problem, after talking to HP tech support for a while that model has a defective motherboard and Hp will replace it free of charge.
Not sure if that is the same in your case but replace the hard drive and run the recovery disk and that should solve the problem if not call HP tech support.
