hp pavilion PC will not start

January 13, 2011 at 16:46:02
Specs: Windows XP
My HP Pavilion PC will not open the main screen with the icons. I get the Windows start up screen and select user - it then says it is loading my settings and I get the background to my main screen but no icons come up. I have tried disconnecting the power and starting again
( there are no icons to enable me to switch off!) but get the same result. I get the same result if I go in with my wife's screen name. Any helpful suggestions???

Will it let you log on in safe mode? (keep tapping F8 key before windows starts to load)

Could be corrupted profile - but odd if both you and your wife affected at same time. Could be malware or just corrupt system file (though usually you'd get a blue screen in this case). If its malware it may well start in safe mode - in which case something like autoruns (or built in msconfig) would help identify likely cause from startup list.
