HP login screen won't type correct password

Specs: Windows XP
I let my EliteBook 8440p go into standby. When I press the start button to wake it up it goes into the normal User/Password screen. The user field is already displayed correctly but when I type in the correct password it does not allow login. Here is the wierd part. When I try to re-enter the user name correctly I get some numbers where letters should have been. For example when I hit the "u" button, it comes up as "2" in the field. I assume that this is what is happening to my password text as well. Since I can not type in the user or password correctly I am forced into a hard reboot and can lose any unsaved info that I was working on. What is going on???

Press the NUM key in the first row of your keyboard, to turn off the numbers, that are also printed in small on the e.g. U key.

on the HP 8440, hold down the Fn key (bottom row 2nd key from the left) and the Scroll/num lk key (top row 4th in from the right) to toggle the numlock on and off.
