HP laptop reset when GF started computer

Specs: Windows XP
my gf started up her computer and everything was reset. All of her setting were as though windows had just been installed. It still had her username and password but everything else was at default. At first I thought that even her files had been wiped too but I found them in a user folder in Documents and Settings. There were also 2 other folders in there. Her original user folder "Holly" was no longer the default folder though. Instead the folder "Holly.HOLLY-86BBF0644.000" had taken over being the default folder. There was also a folder "Holly.HOLLY-86BBF0644" there. I really have no clue what happened. I'm not sure if Norton 360 had anything to do with it because it did prompt me to do a system backup. Unfortunately I hadn't set up a backup yet so I have nothing to restore from, but luckily no important files were lost. I'm just very confused about what could cause something like this so it doesn't happen again because I had to go back through and change all of her settings and toolbars. Thank you for your help

Profiles can get corrupt. The result is either the user is unable to login, or, as you saw, a new profile is created.

There's really no way to 100% guarantee it won't happen again. Just make sure the system is optimized, updates and security patches are installed, etc.

And...also ensure that you (or she...) have made copies of all data that one would like to lose at any time. Copy it all to optical -media; verify the copies are truly accessible on at least one other system too...; and regular refresh/update/make newer more curent copies...?
