Comment:

I have a network with a computer running NT4.0 and my HP882C attached to it. On my other computer I have WinXP Pro installed and I wanna print through the other computer with NT4 on it.
But when I add a new networkprinter in WinXP, he finds the HP882C but he cannot install it! WinXp tells me: cannot connect, the driver is not compatible with WinXP.
and i try to install the win Xp Driver on the Nt4 computer but it wont work, it gives me this message :
(It is not possible to modify this driver.)
What can I do?

DF, I have a similar problem but it's with Win 98SE, XP and a HP 810C printer (attached to the 98 machine). Can get the XP machine to see the printer no problem but when I try to print to it I get the message "page failed to print". Have searched high and low and as of yet have not come up with a solution. HP addresses XP and their Deskjet printers but only when the printer is connected directly to the XP computer.

When 98SE came out I found networking a breeze (have 3 computers networked), ME was a little more stubborn and now I find XP to be worse yet... where is the "user friendly" in all this? Have contacted HP support (long shot) about this and not sure if I'll get a replay but will keep you posted.

Install the 882 or 810c on the pc with winXp locally (you have to select lpt1).
After the installation you have to go into the ports tab and select add port and then new port. The name of the new port will be:\\name of the pc with winNT\name of the printer
e.g:\\ccc_25\hp882c
then click ok.
The new port will appear in the list of the ports.Select it and print a test page.
It should work.

Tried but still no worky... won't allow me to name a port in XP to "\\cs299186-a\hp810c", says the "\" slash is not valid? My printer is attached to my 98SE machine... don't understand why it would install so flawlessly in 98 (over network)and XP has to be such a pain?

Try this way.

Uninstall the printer sw you installed on your win XP deleting the printer icon from the printer folder.
In the printer folder go to:
file/server properties/drivers.
Remove the hp810c driver.

Follow the this path to reinstall the printer driver:add printer/network printer.
Select search for a printer.Select the name of the pc with win98 in the list you get.
You should also see your hp810c.Select it and click next.
At this stage you'll be asked to install the correct printer driver for XP.Click ok and a list of drivers will be displaied.
Select HP on the left (not hewlett packard) and Hp DESKJET 810c on the right.
Click next/next/finish.
See if you can print a demo page.

For win XP,you have to install the driver already present in the system.Hp has no updated drivers (for this printer model) for XP.

You can experience this sort of problems when you have computers with different os in the same network.
You need the right driver for every os.

Good luck!
