I have recently done a fresh install of XP Home(NTFS) on my system:
-AMD 1.2 ghz,
-ASUS A7V-E mother board
(to eliminate computer freezing). The found hardware wizard detects the printer connected via USB. When installing the drivers the message Cannot install this hardware appears. The message indicates an error occured with no explanation.
The HP site indicates to use the XP drivers for this printer.
The printer worked under Windows ME on the same computer. It also worked when I upgraded ME to XP on the same machine under FAT 32.
The computer still freezes!
Any suggestions?

Download the XP printer drivers from the HP website. Uninstall and disconnect the printer. Shutdown the computer hook up thre printer, then reboot and reinstall as a new hardware component when the printer is detected using the XP drivers.

The driver is in the XP driver list.
What is it. Is the New Hardware Wizard coming on
every time you start up??

Thanks for the quick reply.
The HP site has no drivers for XP and this printer. The message in the XP drivers area of the site says to use the XP drivers.
Each time the computer is turned on (with the printer connected and turned on) the Hardware wizard detects it. As I go through the wizard it ends with "there was a problem installing this hardware HP Deskjet 882C."
The device manager does not list a printer. The printer area of XP also does not list a printer.

Thanks for the quick reply Chuck.
I searched this forum as well as Microsoft, HP and did a Google search. Nothing matched my problem.

And you did these directions from HP???
---------------
Manually installing the printer driver [back to table of contents]1. Click Start, then Control Panel.
2. Click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
3. In Printer Tasks, click Add a printer.
4. Click Next.
5. Select Local, then remove the check from Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer.
6. Select Port
Parallel connection is usually LPT1
USB connection is usually USB001Click Next.
7. Select HP from the Manufacturer list.
8. Select the printer model from the printer list, then click Next.
9. Select Yes if this printer is the default printer, or select No if it is not.
Click Next to continue.
10. Select No to skip the test page, then click Next.
11. Click Finish to complete the installation.NOTE: If prompted for a Windows disk in Step 11, do not use the disk that came with the printer, use the Windows XP disk or the recovery disk that came with the computer.
1. If prompted for a Windows disk, insert the appropriate Windows or PC Recovery disk not the disk that came with the printer and follow the instructions on the screen. Once the driver has been installed, it will be listed in the Printers window (Start, Printers and Faxes).

I have tried manually installing the printer driver. When I click finish I get a message box: "Unable to Install Printer. Operation could not be completed."

Still thinking about your problem.
Did you originally (first time) try installing the printer using the CD software that came with
it???
If you did, try removing it. May be in the Add/Remove Programs or somewhere.
My printer CD could not be used with XP.

Thanks for all your help. Its back to the shop for the computer. I am unable to re-start it because of the following problem.
I was examining the device manager (all devices were working properly) and my system stopped responding. Everything was frozen. I pressed the reset button. The system wouldn't re-start. It said I had a corrupt windows/system32 config system. I followed the instructions and used my original XP CD and select R to repair. It would not fix the problem.
The computer had problems freezing during my printer problems. It also had problems freezing when ME was originally installed on the system. The problems continued when I upgraded ME to XP and when a fresh install of XP was done. It may be related to some driver issue. This may be related to the printer problem. I'll report back what they say.
