Just recently I retouched a photograph and saved it as a TIF. I put the photo print cartridge into my HP 5150 printer in place of the black cartridge and tried to print the photo using HP director so I could make 5x7's. Every time I try and print the picture, half-way through the printing the color turns to all shades of purple. All cartridges in the printer are brand new. Is it the HP software's problem, or the printer settings, or something else? Anyone know how to fix this?

Yep, buy a Canon. :-) Just joking (half-way) I really do like Canon. However, I had a friend who had a problem like this with his HP printer. He said it was cheaper to buy a new one than to send it to HP for repair.

I'm not sure if your phot print catridge includes black, but without black none of your colors will turn out right.
I have had excellent service with HP. If your printer is still under warranty, they will send you packing materials to send it in, and it won't cost you a dime to have your device fixed. Turn around time for me was three days. They fixed my iPAQ and shipped it back to me the same day they received it.

thanks for the input, but i am positive you put the photo cartridge in for the black, but anyways, the problem seemed, and i say seemed to be the HP Director software. It printed ok in a different program on the same printer, but that may just be coincidence. Still, if anyone can confirm this as a problem it would be appreciated.
