How turn off thumbs for PNG's?

April 25, 2009 at 16:00:45
Specs: XP Pro srv pk 2, Dual PIII500
Explorer (not Internet Explorer) often crashes when I have a number of png files. The thumbnail icons load for each one a bit slowly. Theyre thumbnails even in Detail view.

Id like to turn it off. I cant find an option in the File Properties, and if it helps, the registry says:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png]
@="ImageFile"
"PerceivedType"="image"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png\OpenWithProgids]
"pngfile"=hex(0):

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png\PersistentHandler]
@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

Googled but not much help, so appreciate some fixes. Thanks.

Bill

... found this:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"ClassicViewState"=dword:00000001

... but not png specific, disables thumbnails

Grrrr

Thanks for the try though but all the other image files such as jpgs, gifs etc are ok. Its just with pngs I have trouble with.

Ok. Fixed by copying the same keys as the jpeg keys but replacing jpeg with png like so:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png]
@="Photoshop.PNGFile"
"PerceivedType"="image"
"Content Type"="image/png"
"PreviousAssociation"="pngfile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png\OpenWithProgids]
"pngfile"=hex(0):

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png\PersistentHandler]
@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"
