I was trying to use winzip to zip a folder containing bunch of image files. However, I found even the folder is zipped, the folder size is pretty much the same as the original size. And I know for the text-file folders, there will be a big size difference between original and zipped folders. Anyone can tell me the reason of the problem? And any other effective way to zip a folder full of images?

The reason your not see much improvement is because most image formats are already compressed. Try zipping a bitmap (uncompressed image format), youll see it's size decrease quite abit. You could try Winrar (www.rarlab.com) but you still won't see much improvement.
