Could anyone please tell me where I can find instructions on how to wipe and reload my OS? I've never done it, but I am confident that with the right instructions I can do it, and I have all my software, I just don't know where to begin. Any ideas?

Do you have a full version of XP ?
Or an Upgrade version of XP ?

Or do you have a Recovery CD from the Computer manufacturer, if Windows was pre-installed on your computer ?

Ok, Alan, I really appreciate your time and effort to help me out here, but I am not a pro at this stuff by any means, and I went to your suggested site, and it doesn't seem to tell me how to first wipe the computer clean? Unless I'm not seeing that? Help, Please?

I am not sure if XP cd will format for you, so
here is this:

HOW TO: Create a Boot Disk for an NTFS or FAT Partition in Windows XP

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305595
--------------------
How to make a boot.ini file:
Open NOTEPAD,
then copy the required text from the article,
then SAVE AS...
name file as BOOT.INI
save boot.ini onto a BLANK floppy.
-----------------
Then get into BIOS, make sure boot order is set to boot from CD drive first.
Then restart with CD in drive.

Before you go through that - did you try a system restore to a time before - when there was nothing wrong with the computer. Why are you wiping out and starting over?

I gave you the wrong information above:

I am not sure if XP cd will format for you, so
here is this:

How to Use the Fdisk Tool and the Format Tool to Partition or Repartition a Hard Disk

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;255867&
-------------------
Simplified version of the above:
How to Format:
Use a 95 or 98 start up disk
Boot to A: Fdisk
Delete Partition or logical drive
Delete primary DOS partition if fat16 or fat32
Delete Non DOS if NTFS
Next
Create DOS partition
Create primary DOS partition
Do you wish to use max size?_______Y
Reboot to A: format C:
You have FAT32
If you want NTFS you can convert later.
-----------------
Then get into BIOS, make sure boot order is set to boot from CD drive first.
Then restart with CD in drive.

I am wiping and reloading because there is a Trojan on my computer that I absolutely cannot find or get rid of and every single program I have used does not find it, yet it keeps popping up on my computer that it is there somewhere, although it has a false directory and all...I've tried everything, I cannot get rid of it. My only option I feel is to wipe and reload. Thank You for all your help. :) ~Jaime

Thank you Alan. The Trojan I have comes up as Trojan horse downloader.Dyfica.G and for some reason, it's a real bugger! As I said before, running my AV does not find it, yet, my AV program will pop up when my computer is idle for a while and tell me it found this virus. Well, the directory it gives for where it was found, doesn't seem to exist, and I have tried running two different AV programs, (AVG and NAV2003) neither found it, Ad-Aware didn't find it, Spybot S&D didn't find it, and Trojan Remover didn't find it! Any other suggestions? You are being very helpful, thank you so much!

Did you disable System Restore and delete your Temp Files before trying the fix?

I would also try posting in the "Security and Virus" section of the boards

http://www.computing.net/security/wwwboard/wwwboard.html

I have just done a bit of reading on it and most people seem to think that a clean install is the only answer....but I have always been an optimist .....I will keep looking for you

Ok, Alan, how do I disable system restore? I can deletet he temp files no problem, but don't know really how to disable the sys restore. Then after that run all of those programs again that I tried?

~Jaime

PS I posted on the security and virus help page and believe or not you gave me 90x more help than what I got over there..that's why I started just asking how to wipe and reload :)

To disable system restore

Right click on "My Computer" select properties and then select "Ststem Restore" then tick the "Turn off System Restore on all drives"

Reboot and see if you get the messages again

Well, Bad news, I disabled the sys restore and then ran the fixes, but now outlook express will not open, and the virus still pops up. I must have screwed something up, ha ha ha. Thanks for all your help, but in the end it looks like i will end up wiping it clean anyway.
