Does anyone know how to use MGADiag.exe? It is a tool from Microsoft that you can use to determine if your version of Windows is genuine or not. I've seen the results of this file online but of course nobody tells you what the name of the file is. When you run the diagnostic, does it create a log file, what is it's name, and how do you read the stuff that's in it?!

Download and run it. Hit the continue option. copy and paste the report into a file of your choice.

Not sure why you would want to run this if your system gets updates.

People have in the past taken a perfect system and then find themselves on the phone with MS because it now reports the os is pirated.

It's a bit like taking a tax return down to the IRS and asking them to audit it to see if you cheated. hmmmmm

When you run the program, it will immediately tell you if Windows is Genuine or not. There is no log file automatically created. What you can do is click the COPY button, then paste into notepad. That will be the "log file". It has no name until YOU name it.

Thanks for your replies! I am interested in running this because a friend of mine can not update to XP SP2. When we try to run SP2, it just sits there and nothing happens. I'm thinking the OS may be pirated. Also, there is no Help and Support; clicking on it does nothing. I can try hitting F8 and try to run SP2 in Safe Mode but something tells me that's not going to work either. I'm starting to think the only way to do this is to wipe the hard drive and start over! His system has XP Home SP1 on it and I've read online that OEM installed software wont allow any upgrades! Thoughts? Suggestions?

I didn't mention that SP2 is on a CD. That's whats not working. Doing Windows Updates is out of the question; my friend still uses dialup! When we try to run SP2 from CD, it starts unpacking files, etc., and then hangs on checking current configuration. Nothing else happens. My take is it's either pirated or an OEM version. In which case no updates will work? Am I correct?
