How to use Get Genuine Kit for Windows xp?

May 18, 2012 at 10:45:51
Specs: Vista Ultimate, SP2, 3.0Ghz/2Ghz
Where can I get a "Get Genuine Kit"? I have reason to believe my friend has an un-genuine edition of Windows XP Home SP1. The OS will not update to SP2. When you get the kit, how do you proceed? I downloaded the Product Key Updater tool from Microsoft. Is the Get Genuine kit just a license? And is that all you need to do is type in the tool the product key that comes with the license? Thanks.

Microsoft do not sell windows XP any more to my knowledge, and support will be dropped completely in the next few years.

If you do manage to get a new serial, you should be able to run the windows XP activation wizard (start, run, oobe/msoobe /a) and type the new key in there. That copy of windows will then be able to upgrade to SP2/3 (preferably 3, as 2 is no longer supported).

thomasad,

Thanks for your response! Looks like a completely new install of XP is in order. We can get XP Pro SP3 online. No more headaches over trying to upgrade the version on there now! Install new with a genuine product key and we're done!

"The OS will not update to SP2."

There are many possible causes of that.

One of them is....

Windows Setup will accept any Product Key that conforms to the rules for the algorithm that is required for the XP version you're installing,

The SP2 updates installation checks on the web in the background to see if the Product Key your Windows installation is using is one known to Microsoft as having been fraudulently used.
(If the Product Key that was used was found on the web, Microsoft probably has that Product Key listed as having been fraudulently used.)
If that DOES find the Product Key has been fraudulently used, you get a message about that, and then the SP2 updates installation quits.

If that's the same or similar as what happened for you....

Microsoft is no longer selling any XP version to be sold as a retail or an OEM version, but you MAY still be able to PAY to get the kit, or at least PAY for a genuine Product Key.

Frequently asked questions about the Windows Genuine Advantage Kit

How do I use the Windows Genuine Advantage Kit to install a genuine copy of Windows XP?

A3: To convert your counterfeit Windows XP software to a genuine copy of Windows XP by using a new product key, you must download and run the Windows Product Key Update Tool. You must use the same computer that you used to purchase the electronic license for Windows XP. To download the Windows Product Key Update Tool, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Lin... (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=45668) The Windows Product Key Update Tool will guide you through the process that converts the counterfeit Windows XP software to a genuine copy of Windows XP.
......

It's still there on the Microsoft web site:

Frequently asked questions about the Windows Genuine Advantage Kit
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932301
.....

If you did not PAY for a kit, or PAY for a genuine Product Key, if you otherwise have a genuine Product Key for the Windows version that was installed, OEM or Retail, whichever it is, for XP Home, it doesn't matter whether the CD had no SP updates, or SPx updates, then you can change the fraudulent key to the genuine key,

either by using the Windows Product Key Update Tool,

or by following the procedure in this article:

Get IT Done: Change the product key on Windows XP
http://www.techrepublic.com/article...

The script file method works ONLY for Volume licensed versions of XP.
.....

The official Microsoft sticker that has the Product Key on it for the computer is supposed to be stuck onto the outside of the computer case. If the computer came with it, that's a genuine Product Key on that sticker that will probably NOT be found to have been fraudulently used.
You can use the Product Key on that sticker with a CD that is intended for the SAME version of XP as on that sticker - Home , Pro, or Pro 64 bit, for the same type of license - OEM, retail, or Volume - whether the CD has / had no SP updates, or SPx updates.

If the CD is a copy of a Windows CD, or a "slipstreamed" CD e.g. which has had the SP3 updates integrated into the original contents of a Windows CD, which version of XP the CD was intended for can be determined by examining a certain file on the CD.

"I have reason to believe my friend has an un-genuine edition of Windows XP Home SP1"

Did you bother to check? All you need to do is run Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool: MGADiag.exe direct download

And even if it is "non-genuine", there are numerous sites that explain how to make it genuine. It doesn't cost a cent & windows does NOT have to be reinstalled. All you needed to do was enter the right search terms into google.

EDIT: you asked about this weeks ago.

http://www.computing.net/answers/wi...

And why couldn't you have downloaded SP3 for him, put it on a disk, then install it on his machine? Or are you using dial-up too?

Yes, he's using dial up! So, I have to download all the files before trying it out on his computer. Can you even get an XP Product key still with XP support about to drop? That would be the best option if indeed it is not genuine. Going to see if it is genuine today.

"Yes, he's using dial up!"

I asked if YOU were using dial up. If YOU have a hi-speed connection, YOU can download SP3 (approx 316MB) for him, burn it to a CD or put it on a USB jumpdrive, then install it on his PC for him.

As for the XP genuine status & how to "fix" it, there are certain topics that are against forum rules & cannot be discussed. If you want to fix it the "legal" way, buy a retail copy of XP for about $50 so that you can get a legal product key. You don't have to reinstall Windows, all you need to do is change the "illegal" key to a "legal" key. If you don't want to spend the $50, enter the correct search terms into google & you will find ways to "make windows 100% genuine" & it won't cost you a penny.
