The first thing to learn about updating your bios is DON'T DO IT unless your system has a specific problem that can only be resolved by doing so.
The second thing to learn is that with a name-brand system, the only place to get a bios update is from the system manufacturer. In your case from HP. You must identify the exact model number of your system and be certain that the bios update file you obtain specifically refers to your model and motherboard revision.

Updating the bios is a high-risk task. Should there be any kind of power interruption during the process, or the wrong update be used to flash your board, this can kill a system.
The actual process of updating a BIOS is usually referred to as Flashing. To accomplish this you need a working floppy drive, Have it set as first boot device. Obtain the correct flashing program and bios update files and save them to a bootable floppy disk. You may also need to open up the case and shift a motherboard jumper to allow the bios update. Read your motherboard manual for detailed instructions as every system is different.
Boot up with that disk, Execute the flashing tool. It should give you the option to save a copy of the current bios version. Do this.Up to this point you can back out without harm. Then instal the new bios file and pray to your IT gods that nothing goes wrong.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Does your system have any problems other than Version Tracker telling you your drivers are old? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Again, you have a name-brand system and the components you are talking about may have specific drivers developed by HP. Visit HP Support and download the latest motherboard drivers from them. Other than that, I suggest ignore VT.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Updating drivers is OK to do but probably not necessary. That is something toatally different than updating the bios.

Did version tracker also tell you your BIOS was old? Ignor those messages. Don't look for trouble. Trouble will find you soon enough by itself.

The Bios controls the functions of the pc hardware it is in no way, shape or form related to software hardware that windows needs to confrim the piece of hardware you are using so that it can use it properly.

The only time you should ever flash the Bios is if you are putting in a newer processor, video card, and in some cases certain types of ram in which your motherboard requires to do so in order for your motherboard to read it.

If your mother board is that old then how much do you have to lose? If you are carefull and follow the oem instructions to the T you will be OK. I have flashed the cmos on three different systems and one more than once. All went well just do all your homework first.

Read the entire thread before giving dangerous advise.
No advantage to flashing. Isn't going to update any drivers.

This is true. It will not update the drivers but if you are going to refresh an old pc the best place to start is the cmos.
But if Enton is uncomfortable about flashing then he shouldnt. Maybe its time for a new system.

PS I dont want to misslead anyone.

Unless you have a BIOS related problem AVOID repeat AVOID updating the BIOS.

As for drivers, again if you have a specific problem that needs fixing then you should consider updating. If not then better to avoid.

Often drivers are updated for very specific situations which you may not be experiencing and thus do no need the update. Sadly most providers these days provide a very sketch revision history (or none in some cases) of the reasons for their Driver and/or BIOS updates.

For drivers go to the HP website
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en...
and key in your details and check if you need any updates.

Alternatively let us know your model details and you may get a more specific link to your PC on HPs website.
