With ipad plugged into USB port, system starts to boot up screen then goes blue with all sorts of worrying warnings. Looks like it upsets the operating system. Does not cause permanent damage but of course photo download out of the question. If itunes is fired up then the iPad plugged in, device option appears briefly then the blue screen returns.

From previous issues I have seen it may be outdated drivers or photo software from the connected computer. Also a USB conflict, if you have another cord available try that, or try a different USB plug if the xp has more that one on it. http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1502?...
still agree with the above posting. Its probably an itunes crash error, but more info can narrow it down.
