I want to know how people are able to find my IP address in a chat room and want to learn I can do it as well. The particular chat room I'm talking about is There are 30 some user's that are able to talk at once in the same room. I know netstat will give me a list of IPs but I don't know which IP belongs to which user name. I use Windows XP.

I think I have to have some direct connection between me and the particular user whose IP I want. Is this correct? And how do I get this connection? Will a private whisper work or would I have to get them to accept a invite to a private room?

That kind of thing usually isn't possible on a chat site. There might be a site specific way of doing this.
But even if you do obtain an IP address you have no way of knowing what you have. It might be the individuals personal Internet connection, or a proxy server, or a public Internet access point, or something else. And you have no way of knowing which it is.

Why this preoccupation with IP addresses. At best all an IP address with tell you is what country the individual is in. Depending on the ISP being used it might even tell you what part of the country but that's is about all.

Anything else requires information for the ISP that own the IP address and they are not going to reveal that from some random request.

... also some might use dynamic addressing (rather than fixed) so you only know which server they are using.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
