Download TweakUI from MS. It allows you to make a lot of "hidden" settings. One of the settings allows you to select the account to log in with and set the password. Realize though that the password is stored in the registry in plain text, so if someone has access to your computer they could get your password.

Do you have any other way, I have had bad things with TweakUI, if you don't know how to install and use it, it can make a real mess of things, I have somehow got rid of it before just don't know where I found the information?

If you have Net Framework 1.1 in Add/Remove Programs, then you have to Update it here ---
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827...
The Welcome to Windows screen appears when you start Windows XP after you install the .NET Framework 1.1
--------------
AUTOMATIC LOGON:

In Control Panel,
click User Accounts,
then "Change the way users log on or off",
check mark both items--
"Use Welcome Screen", and
"Use Fast User Switching"

Also to say if you have Guest Account showing at
Log on, then turn it off.

In User Accounts,
click Guest Account,
then click "Turn off Guest Account".

If you've ever wondered what goes on behind the Windows Startup Screen when your computer boots, this will disable the screen and allow you to see what's really happening.
Click [Start] and right click on [My Computer]
Select [Properties]
Select the [Advanced] tab
In the [Startup and Recovery] section, click [Settings]
In the [System Startup] section, click [Edit] to open the boot.ini file in Notepad
You will see a line that looks similar to the one below
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
To disable the Startup Screen change to line to read as below. The change is shown in red.
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /sos
Note: There is a space between 'fastdetect' and '/sos'
Close Notepad, clicking [Yes] when Notepad asks if you want to save your changes.
Click [OK] [Apply] and [OK] to exit System Properties
Reboot computer and the Startup Screen will be gone

Post 4 above is for those who dislike watching XP boot logo (caterpillar screen) but it does not enable you to bypass the welcome screen login. Only the AUTOMATIC LOGON procedures suggested by Chuck 2 in Post 3 will work in lieu of using XP powertoy TweakUI.

Why not just update the .Net Framework? Many different software now requires it so you will most likely need it at some point.

As for TeakUI causing problems just by installing it, I have my doubts. But, yes, if you go messing with things that you are not knowledgeable with , then it can cause problems. But, the tweak to enable an automatic login is about as benign as you can get.

I had all my updates for net framework and with Tweak UI I installed it a couple of years ago and the problem I had was just unpacking and installing the thing, it just bothered me too much to mess with and yes I did do some tweaks with it and I should not have I could probably try it again now that I know a little more about computers and settings, but right now just trying to install my basics and getting settings right before I take a Image of my partition.
