MrBedo, Right click your Desktop, choose Properties, under the Desktop tab click the Customize Desktop button then under the General tab uncheck Internet Explorer. click OK/Apply/OK.

Thanks for the replies, but none of them work I'm afraid.

Tufenuf - I already have those settings unticked, and although I cannot see the icons on the desktop, if I view the desktop through Explorer then IE is still there.

Chuck - The desktop clean up wizard doesn't permenantly remove the IE icon unfortunately, it still reappears after being removed. As much as I like your idea about removing IE completely I'm afraid I cannot do this because I need to use both firefox and IE for my job.

Any other suggestions ?

thanks again

MrBedo, Open Windows Explorer and check out C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop

If you find any Internet shortcuts in those Desktop folders right click them and delete them.

Nope, didn't find any there at all.

I should probably mention that I'm a sys admin and so know my way around a computer pretty well.

I'm guessing a reg edit's needed to fix this annoying 'bug' !!
