You could just tweak xp, that might speed it up.

More RAM would make a big difference. Eliminating some of the XP visual bells and whistles can help some in the mean time.

Before buying more RAM you should know how much you have in your system. If you only have 64 or 128 MB's then more RAM might help. If you have 256 MB's or more, then it likely won't.

It's a common misconception that more RAM will "speed up" your PC/laptop. Not true! More RAM can and and will improve performance of applications....especially memory hungry ones. Unless you're editing big video or sound files, 256 MB's should be plenty.

So...........check and find out how much you have before you worry about buying more. How do you check? Simple, go into Control Panel, and open the System applet. It should tell you right there on the General tab how much you have.

just make sure you get RAM by the same vendor as already in your laptop. (For Toshiba this is Kingston - but check up anyway; phone your local supplier of Toshiba parts and tell them your model number). Other vendor's RAM will probably work too, but save yourself some unneeded worry and just get the same.

These sites lets you look up your laptop and tell you what amount/type of RAM your laptop takes:
www.crucial.com
www.kingston.com

In my experience, Crucial RAM has always been compatible with laptops' factory-installed RAM.

"256 MB's should be plenty"

On an XP based machine that isn't just for showroom purposes, this is very far from being the truth.

I would recommend a minimum of 512MB or even more depending on the type(s) of supplemental applications you've installed after you got the laptop.
