I have a small home network with XP's on all the systems, and I am somehow sharing anything I want (including Program Files, User Profiles, and Windows directories). For those of you who want to do this but have not figured out how, follow my way. (Some things might not be necessary, but I am just telling you what I did on my systems to get it to work).
1.) Open 'My Computer' and go to 'Tools:Folder Options', and in the 'View' tab, and uncheck 'Simple Sharing' at the bottom.
2.) Right click the folder you want to share ('Windows' or 'Program Files' or [user] profile directory) and choose 'Sharing and Security...'
3.) Choose 'Share this folder'. Go to Permissions and make sure there is a group called 'Everyone'. If there isn't one, Add a group named 'Everyone'. Allow all permissions for the account. (If there is a 'Security' tab, make sure the 'Everyone' account is there as well.
4.) Test it out by going on a network computer and opening up the folder from 'My Network Places'. You should now be able to browse 'Program Files' or whatever folder you shared. If it doesn't work, check again that the 'Everyone' group is listed under 'Permissions' and 'Security' and give it all privileges.
5.) If you don't want to make a separate share for the folder but instead want to share the whole (C:) drive, enable sharing on the (C:) drive by using the same method as used in steps (1-3). Again make sure the group 'Everyone' is listed under groups for 'Permissions' and 'Security'.
6.) Now the whole (C:) drive is shared including 'Program Files'. It is now safe to unshare the 'Program Files' or whatever folder you shared (it will still be shared by going into the (C:) drive and opening it from there).
This is my way of doing it. If you try it, post a reply telling if it worked, and if not, say what is going wrong.
Peace!
