I had three PC, 1 has WinXP pro, 1 has WinXP Home, 1 has Win2000. I had 4 ports hub.
I put cable internet line into one port of hub, three pc network line into other three port of hub. In network setup wizard, I select the computer connect to the internet through another computer, I also made same workgroun name -- MSHOME and open guest account.
Those three pc sometime can reconize and access each other, but sometime deny access with error message :" no permission". Sometime can access and transfer file, but alway stop transfer file at the midway with error message : can not reconize network system".
I don't know how to fix this unstable home network ?
How to re-setup home network ?

Your whole setup being from the internet to your HUB IS ALL WRONG.. You have to use NAT(NETWORK AREA TRANLATION) .. Now in order to do this you will need two NETWORK INTERFACE CARDS (NIC) installed on one of your computers,, i suggest making the XP PRO box your gateway machine. So now your internet connection has to plug into one of the NICs on your XP machine then you have to plug a cable in from your second NIC on your XP machine to your HUB.. then you can plug all your other machines into the hub and now you can set up your peer to peer network.. You need to enable internet sharing on your XP machine on the NIC that the internet is connected to.. then with DHCP enabled it will assign your second NIC an ip address and subnet.. your Second NIC is your gateway and it controls the translations to your other machines plugged into the hub that are on your network.. now if DHCP is enabled on your second NIC it will autmatically assign ips to all the machines that are plugged into the hub,, if its not then you just have to hard code ips and gateways and dns into your other machines.. hopefully you can take it from there.. in the end just use ping to test connections from your machies plugged into the hub.. or your easy alternative is to by a router for 50$ which do all this #@$@ for you... and you can just plug everything straight into the router like you were before into the hub.

The configuration you have is OK. Just start by connecting the Cable Modem into the 'uplink' port of your hub, then use another connection to your XP Pro PC. Make sure that you setup your cable internet connection and that it works fine.

Then use 'START', 'MY NETWORK PLACES' and under 'Network Tasks' choose 'Set up a home or small office network'. Follow this to the 'Select a connection method' window and choose 'Other'. On the next scrren select 'This computer connects to the internet directly or through a network hub....', you can view an example of this type of connection. From there on follow the prompts and make sure you 'Make a Network Setup Disk' and then run this setup disk on the other PC's. You'll find this works really well.. I've set up lots of SOHO networks.
