This may not be helpful if you're uncomfortable making hardware changes, but unplug the Hard Drive, and any other bootable devices, so that the computer is forced to boot off of the CD.

If he unplugs the hard drive, then how is he going to install the OS? You're right, it's not helpful.

There is usually a key you press during boot up that forces the boot menu, try that. If it doesn't boot to the CD then either the drive or the disc is bad. Also, have a look at the disc and make sure it's clean. Is this the original XP disc from Microsoft or a copy?

Look, what I'm saying is that you unplug the HDD when you use the boot disc, and then plug it in when you start the install.

It needs to be plugged in durring the boot process or it won't be seen, Although technicaly SATA is hot swapable, it needs the right drivers to do so and I doubt those drivers are present during the instal process.

What I'd say is to just manually force a boot by changing the boot sequence in the BIOS. Go in, and change it to make the CD drive in front of you're HDD.
