How to restrict other pc from accessing my pc

Specs: Windows XP
under 1 local area network and using windows XP professional, how can i restrict users to access other people's pc, lets say when someone key in the ipaddress of a computer it will be asking for a user name and password before they can gain access on that particular ip address

If there are no files shared, there is nothing to access.

If you want to password protect the drive, go to user accounts in the control panel, uncheck the welcome screen & check all users must use a password to login. Make sure you have all passwords set first.

There are two parts of a shared folder. One is the microsoft network settings and the other is NTFS file permissions. You generally open all network to read write but limit access by setting the proper ntfs file permissions.

The correct answer is you put a deny on the host name of the other computer in your local software firewall.

The other pc will be denied access period.
