How to rerive old windows data

Specs: Windows XP, 2.0 Core2Duo/1gb
i shutdown my laptop today,when i opened it after and hour it asks me to go to safe mode when i selected it than after that a blue screen blinks and it restarts.....after that i tried to copied windows xp but it was unsuccessful than i tried to install a fresh copy and deleted the old one by mistake(i dint format my c drive) but it gave me and option to install windows in a same folder or in a new folder so i selected install in old folder but delete the old the problem is that when i installed it successfully ,my c drive shows that the space occupied is same as before...but i cant access to my old data ?it exists in the drive but i have no clue how to access my documents and old desktop folders......plz help me what should i do .........

What makes you think the files still exist? Are you seeing folders that you can't open?

Your old files MAY or MAY not still be there or they may have been over written. You could try a program called recuva which I am linking below.
