Sure is. Copy and paste the following in your run box-
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Works like a charm.

Or if you are not comfortable with the above Doug Knox has written a Vbs script that will prevent it from starting. See:

Why not try the "Add / Remove Programs" through the "Control Panel?"

HOW TO REMOVE MESSENGER FROM XP:
Look for sysoc.inf in C:\Windows\INF.
open it and search for

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

change it to

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7

Now you can remove it via add/remove software.

That's all fine and great but mine is so much easier-

Go to Start> Run and copy and paste this- RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then hit okay. It's as simple as that

Try gpedit.msc adminastrative templates /windows components/messenger change the properties to enable do not allow this program to run. This will only work if you are using the XP Pro version . In XP home I suggest the flamethrower to the MSN folder in the program files or windows folder DELETE
