Hi all,

All started with that I run a tool to remove pests and viruses and
deleted the infected files which resulted that I couldn't start
few programs IE, IIS etc (Seems to me I deleted some system files).

The tool didn't create a back-up so I could not restore my system.
I decided to re-install the OS(winXP PE).
I have a 40 GB harddisk partitioned into two drives, C: (23GB) and
F: (16GB).

The new installation was on F: while the old was on C:

Installation was ok but when I re-started my computer I got two OS
to choose between, the old one and the new one.
Further, my old files and catalogue were still there on C: drive.

Efter that every program I installed was on F: drive. As I am used
of using C: drive I decided to re-install OS on C: drive.
Now when I starts my computer I have three OS'es to choose between
with all my old files and catalogue which is not so convinient.
Efter searching on the internet I thought "fdisk /mbr" could help me
to remove the extra OS and all my old files and catalogues.

I run the "start up win95" disk and gave the command "fdisk /mbr"
and re-install the OS again.
Now when I starts the computer I see four OS'es to choose between.

What I want is only one OS and remove all my old file and catalogue as
I got my computer when I bought it 6 months ago.
I am tired now, it has taken me more than two days now.
Can someone give me a sequence of steps how to get out of this problem.
Better more detail than less as I am not expert in this area as you
can see that I have same OS almost four times on my machine.

Sorry for sending too many questions in this forum but it has not been
my intention.

thanks for help
regards

now understand this is what I would do.you have 2 partitions right? ok first if there anything on c drive that you want to keep copy and paste it to the 2nd partition ,than in the 2nd partition delete the windows folder anything that else there that you don't want.when this is done than reinstall win xp to c: drive but this time tell it not to save anything other words to format the drive and than install windows xp.when complete it should only have xp on c drive.plese understand this is the way I did my when I had two os and wanted to get one off.it work for me.keep in mind there more ways to do this.

Hi,

For the future...

You can use the Windows XP CD to do a "repair" installation with a little "r".
The first Repair option is with a big "R" which you don't want. But if you choose the second little "r" it will replace missing or clobbered files. You will lose some settings but is a lot less destructive and less work than starting all over.

Second and even better, I know that you know this but really consider to begin using ntbackup to create a backup of your system on your second partition. I probably have a system that is average size and everything takes just over 3 GB. And I mean everything - Windows, Program Files, Registry, E mail.

Good Luck

Hi all again,

I found out how to formate drives.
Efter formating and installation I have still
problem.

I try to explain what I did.
As I mentioned in one of my posts that I had fours
dual OS.

I restarted the computer and I highlighted the F: drive and formated it worked and all vanished from F: drive (good).
Then I put winXP installation CD and installed on C: drive with formate C: drive.
When installation was complete I was surprised to see that I had all the old catalogues there even I had formated C: drive.
It seems to me as I had 3 other dual OS on drive C:, the fomate worked only for one and not for other two OSes.

Now I tried to install winXP on drive F: and efter installation tried to formate C: drive then I got I message cann't delete becuase these are system and OS files.

Can some help me what to do now?
So that I get only one OS and computer in a condition I had when I bought it.
thanks
regards
