Hey, Guys, my laptop just crashed. The system can't start, and it says that I need to restart Windows xp installation program, and press "r" for repairing.

But the problem is that my neither Cd-rom nor Floppy disk rom works, and is there any guy can tell me how to get into the Window xp intallation program, without these two?

Any response will be appreciated, thanks first.

I personally don't know of anyway to do it. You need either a whole crap load of floppy disks, or the CD to boot with. I can think of at least one way that might not require the CD, but you still need a boot floppy that can read NTFS volumes (if you're using the NTFS filesystem that is).

you can use this action if you can , use flash memory or borrow it from any one and i think you get in pentium III usb connector - try to format usb from any other system and install windows xp on it it must be bigger enough to hold windows xp files , let any technical gye help you in that

Simply put: No CDROM, No Windows.

What's wrong with the CDROM anyway?

Some (if not most) laptops by big brands, have a restore-partition hidden on the harddisk. Check the website of your laptop to see if that applies to you too & for specific instructions on how to restore.

But did you try to startup in SafeMode from the bootmenu ? Maybe it's just a driver-error and you don't need to repair XP.

Hi svg :-)

You're correct - most do. These hidden partitions use EISA file system and can be accessed only from the restore CD, which seems to hold the key.

Just in case you didn't know, EISA is a standard bus (computer interconnection) architecture that extends the ISA standard to a 32-bit interface. It was developed in part as an open alternative to the proprietary Micro Channel Architecture (MCA) that IBM introduced in its PS/2 computers.
EISA data transfer can reach a peak of 33 megabytes per second (source: http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,289893,sid9_gci213932,00.html)

Hello XpUser
: )

I think it may take a particular key-press-combination to enter the restore partition, but I'm not sure about that.

It's kind of stupid to retype all my response for the third time..

First, thanks guys, appreciate all your help..

I have done some research, and I guess it is kind of hard without cd-rom and floppy.

My computer is KDS, kind sucks and there should be No hidden partition, as lease I did not see it through Partiion Magic..

I think I might just wait to see whether I can borrow a Cd-rom or Floppy from someone,, and then fix it.. that will be a lot easier..

Though I do have a usb IBM 20G drive, too much stuff inside...

I will continue to do more resarch to see which Linux Dist might make this happen..

XpUser, my cd-rom is quite old, and hardly read any disk,, I tried the disk of Slackware this morning,, just started, and then stuck,, ...

The c_850.nls file is a CodePage file, which is stupid little file that handles keyboard<>language settings.

I've e-mailed you a copy of the c_850.nls file.

If you can find a way to replace the faulty one on your computer, it might solve the problem.

Can't you get into SafeMode with a CommandPrompt or any other mode from the BootMenu?

Thanks, svg, but I don't think I will be able to get the replaced.

Just borrowed an USB cd-rom, but my old laptop didn't recognize it, so I could't boot the system through this USB cd-rom. and also the BIOS has no relevant option for me to choose, like "boot from USB-ZIP,"

yahhhhhhh,, out of luck, and I think I might try to install Debian or whatever Linux distribution through my 64mb usb flash disk.. Hope I can find a solution here..

svg, for safe mode,I tried all options, and none worked..

Thanks again,, svg,, now I am hoping either I can have my laptop recognize the USB cd-rom at booting time, or installing a Linux dist on flash disk,..

mark

This may help:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/usb-boot.mspx

Only other solution I can think of is some sort of direct connection with another computer or putting the laptop-harddisk into another computer as a second disk, but I don't have a laptop, so I'm basically out of suggestions...
:(

Best of Luck!!
